In this episode, you’ll learn:
What an “SOS Routine” is and how to make one
4 steps you can take RIGHT NOW to mitigate your pain
How to recognize and stop the cycle of self-sabotage
The impact pain has on your identity and how to separate the two
Vinny Crispino is back! Last week we laid the groundwork, and this week we go a level deeper and dig into the steps we can take to relieve pain NOW and change the stories we tell ourselves about our relationships with chronic pain. If you missed part one, be sure to check it out here.
Vinny was a decorated D1 collegiate swimmer at the University of Wyoming, with his eyes set on the big leagues, but a surfing accident took him from elite athlete to disabled in a matter of seconds. After years of learning about the body and searching for relief, Vinny is now pain-free, competing in ultramarathons, and helping others find healing through Pain Academy.
In today's episode, Mathew, Chris, and Vinny discuss four steps you can take today to start finding relief from chronic pain. They also talk about how to recognize and avoid self-sabotage, the complicated realities of using medications to mask pain, and the parallels between a weight loss transformation journey and a pain relief transformation journey.
Our modern mentality skews towards quick fixes, instant gratification, and masking pain. However, the way medications impact our healing is complicated and may be causing us to unknowingly reinjure ourselves. Pain itself is not the problem; it’s the messenger, and if we can turn off the alarm bells and listen, there’s actually something very useful it will tell us. The physical pain is real, but the emotional pain is making it worse. We may even be self-sabotaging because pain can be a useful excuse as to why we limit ourselves or haven't achieved our goals. Chronic pain can become part of our identity if you let it, and without the correct mindset, no amount of therapy will help you. However, by creating a SOS routine to calm your nervous system, distancing yourself from the pain, and regulating your emotions, you can begin to rewrite your story and edit the pain out.

Relieve Chronic Pain through Emotional Healing with Vinny Crispino
Monday Jan 15, 2024
Monday Jan 15, 2024
Vinny was a decorated D1 collegiate swimmer at the University of Wyoming, with his eyes set on the big leagues. Eventually, he moved out to California, where a surfing accident changed his life forever. Vinny went from an elite athlete to being disabled in a matter of seconds. What followed was almost four years of frantically searching for answers everywhere he could. After finding no relief, he realized only he would be able to help himself. At 23, Vinny went back to school to learn the basics and try to heal his body. Today, he is pain-free, competing in ultramarathons, and helping others find healing through Pain Academy.
In today's episode, Mathew, Chris, and Vinny discuss their experiences with chronic pain, the solutions they have tried, the inevitable addiction issues, and what finally worked. Understanding the physiology of pain is one part of the equation, but Vinny was only able to find relief when he began to understand the emotional side of pain. He tells us he thinks about treating back pain like anxiety or depression by regulating our internal worlds with thoughts and words. Like many of us, Vinny has had to overcome years of suppressing his emotions and has developed practical tools over the years to help himself and others recover.
In this episode, you will hear:
The craziest (unsuccessful) treatments the guys tried to find relief from their back pain.
The impact chronic pain has on our relationships
The emotional factors contributing to chronic pain
Mistakes to avoid when you are experiencing pain

Reframing New Year’s Resolutions + Keeping Promises Made to Yourself
Monday Jan 08, 2024
Monday Jan 08, 2024
In today's episode, Mathew and Chris discuss why New Year's promises are better than resolutions, why most people abandon them after about 4 to 6 weeks, and tips to stay consistent with your goals. Whether it’s Chris's promise to stretch or Mathews' promise to hit the gym, the guys are right there with you, fighting through the struggles and celebrating the achievements. Thankfully, there are some things we can all do to set ourselves up for success!
First, expect it to get hard. It’s not if, but rather when the temptations to give up or get complacent will strike. Look at the conditions that have led to failure for you in the past and identify what you can do this time to overcome those challenges. Next, be honest with yourself about why you are making the promise. Is it out of tradition, outside pressure, or a real desire to change? Every day is a chance to do something new, and there is no reason to wait until January 1st. Any time you are ready to commit is the perfect time to start.
Setting SMART goals and maintaining a good mindset are also essential to keeping our promises to ourselves. Chris walks us through the science of goal-setting, and Mathew talks about avoiding comparing our journeys to those of other people. No matter what, keeping the promise we make to ourselves is what is most important. If you need to, alter your goals to make them achievable, sustainable, and realistic. Don’t take on too much or let perfection get in the way of progress. Just 10 minutes a day can change your whole life!
In this episode, you will hear:
Why promises are better than resolutions
What promises Chris and mathew made to themselves this year
The most common resolutions
The most common reasons we don't stick with resolutions
The importance of keeping our promise to ourselves and how to make that easier to do
